What Is a Co-occurring Disorder?
A co-occurring disorder refers to the reality that two conditions, such as a specific mental health disorder (e.g., depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.) and a substance use disorder, often co-exist together. While neither condition actually causes the other, they often appear together and can magnify the symptoms of the other. Treatment for co-occurring disorders simply means viewing both conditions as primary and interrelated, rather than addressing one and then the other. Integrating treatment for mental health and substance use disorders leads to a better quality of care and improved health outcomes by treating the whole person. Many clients report increased life satisfaction once they understand how symptom management impacts – and is impacted by – use, abstinence, and long-term sobriety.
